- Inventory
Spiceworks supports a number of leading Anti-Virus & Firewall packages by detecting their existence as well as determining if they are “up to date” or not. This can be an invaluable piece of information to any sys admin who is trying to keep their network secure and virus-free.
A Spiceworks network scan should pick up most antivirus information directly from Windows. Any AV program that supports Windows Security Center can be monitored by Spiceworks. With Windows 7 and newer, you can check the Windows Action Center to see if WindowsSecurity Center is disabled. As long as the Security Center is enabled, Windows will show the installed antivirus program and itshealth/status. Then, by querying Windows Security Center, Spiceworks will report that same info per device.
Alternatively, if you’re using a server operating system that doesn’t have Security Center or if you have chosen to keep Security Center disabled in Windows, a handful of antivirus programs are supported by name, without you having to do anything.
View antivirus information in Spiceworks
Spiceworks will gather your antivirus information during the network scan, including the status (i.e. up-to-date status) and present this information to you in two places: a widget on your dashboard and the configuration tab in your inventory:
- Dashboard Widget: The Security Center widget includes a chart to show you a quick look at the antivirus status of your network as well as the antivirus programs detected on your network and their quantities. You can see the number of devices with no AV, up-to-date AV, out-of-date AV, and unknown. Click a section of the pie chart to be taken to your inventory where you can see thosedevices.
- Configuration Tab: The configuration tab in the device view of your Spiceworks Inventory will show you the antivirus programbeing run and whether it is up-to-date.
Why is my AV info wrong? Especially in the Security Center on the dashboard
Spiceworks may show devices on your network with no antivirus or out-of-date status, even though you know this to be false. In these cases, make sure that Security Center is enabled, because Spiceworks is unable to gather the correct AV information.
